Where the name Tholen comes from: Initially there was a toll at Schakerloo (a former glory, which was located southwest of the current city of Tholen) for shipping on the Striene. Graaf Willem I had a toll built on the embankment of the Fifteen Hundred Gemet Polder for shipping. A settlement arose around it that in 1290 obtained toll freedom itself. This developed into the city of Tholen, which obtained city rights around 1366. Hence the name Tholen.

Funny to know, a number of well-known Dutch people grew up or were born in Tholen:

• Willem Hendrik van den Berge, State Secretary for Finance from 1959-1965
• Marjon de Hond, weather woman
• Niels van den Berge, politician
• Andreas van Luchtenburg, astronomer, mathematician and almanac calculator
• Rico Verhoeven, kick boxer

There are also many fun things to do in Tholen. Here are a few suggestions

For the real adrenaline junkies among us, this is an activity that you must do at least once in your life. The Skyshark is made in the form of man’s most feared sea monster. The name says it all “the shark”. The Skyshark is shot like a cannonball. Within 4 seconds you will be going over a 100 kilometers per hour. You dive under the water just like a torpedo to your target and with an immense jump of up to 6 meters you rise above the water until gravity pulls you back down again. Combine your Skyshark experience with a wonderful stay at De Zeeuwse Parel holiday park! Book now!

For nature lovers, walking in the Barefoot Path is always a success. The bare footpath makes walking in the forest more fun. Follow the 2.5 km long trail that runs through Landgoed Levensberg. With your bare feet you can feel the warm and soft sand as well as the moist ground of the forest, so take off your shoes, socks and enjoy! The bare footpath is located in Bergen op Zoom. Combine your ideal walk with a perfect stay at De Zeeuwse Parel holiday park. Book now!
